Deir ez-Zor is located in eastern Syria on the banks of the Euphrates River and is the capital of Deir ez-Zor Governorate. The city is famous for its iconic suspension bridge, one of its most prominent landmarks, as well as the Deir ez-Zor Citadel (Rahba Citadel) dating back to the Islamic era. The region contains archaeological remains from the Assyrian, Roman, and Islamic civilizations, including the ancient city of Dura-Europos (Syrian desert) and the city of Mari (Tell Hariri), which was the capital of an ancient Amorite kingdom. Deir ez-Zor is known for growing wheat, cotton, and vegetables along the Euphrates plain, characterized by its green river islands and palm groves. Despite the destruction the city has suffered during the war, its historical monuments still testify to its authenticity and strategic importance throughout the ages.
