Old Damascus is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in history, dating back to the 7th millennium BC. It is characterized by its ancient walls, narrow alleys, traditional markets, and historical landmarks such as the Umayyad Mosque, Hanania Church, Al-Hamidiyah Souq, and Al-Qaymariyah. The old city contains many traditional Damascene houses, caravanserais, and historical baths. UNESCO listed it as a World Heritage Site in 1979.
