Syria 9 views
Latakia is located on the western Syrian coast overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. It is the fourth largest city in Syria and a major port of the country. Latakia's history dates back to the Phoenician era, where it was known as "Ramitha", and later flourished during the Roman and Byzantine periods. Its most notable archaeological landmarks include: the ancient city of Ugarit (Ras Shamra), 12 km north of the city, where the first alphabet in the world (Ugaritic alphabet) was discovered on clay tablets dating back to the 14th century BC. The city also features the Roman Triumphal Arch (Victory Arch in the Dedetor area), the Roman Theatre in Jableh (20 km away), and Saladin's Citadel (Saone Castle) located 25 km northeast, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Latakia is famous for its beautiful beaches such as Russian Beach and Blue Beach, pine forests, its tourist port, cultural center, as well as popular markets and restaurants serving the finest seafood. Latakia is considered an important tourist destination combining history, nature, and entertainment.
