Palmyra Castle (also known as Fakhr-al-Din al-Ma'ani Castle) is situated on a hilltop overlooking the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria. The castle was built in the 13th century AD by the Mamluks and was renovated in the 17th century by the Lebanese Emir Fakhr-al-Din al-Ma'ani II. The castle is distinguished by its tight military design, featuring defensive towers, high walls, rooms, and tunnels. From the castle, visitors can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of Palmyra's columns, the Temple of Bel, the Temple of Baal, the Roman Theatre, and the entire ancient city. The castle is part of the Palmyra archaeological site, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Despite the destruction that affected some of Palmyra's monuments during the Syrian war, the castle remains standing, witnessing the brilliance of Islamic defensive architecture.
