Aleppo is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in history, dating back to the 6th millennium BC. Located in northwestern Syria, it was the capital of the Aramean kingdom and an important trading center on the Silk Road. Aleppo is famous for its majestic Citadel, dating back to the 3rd millennium BC and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which features a royal palace, mosques, baths, and tunnels. The Old City also includes its covered markets (Aleppo Souks) such as Al-Attareen Souk and Al-Saboun Souk, historic khans like Khan Al-Jumrok and Khan Al-Shounah, as well as the Great Mosque of Aleppo (Umayyad Mosque) and ancient churches like the Church of the Forty Martyrs. Aleppo is known for the production of Aleppo soap and Eastern cuisines such as kibbeh, falafel, and baklava.
